Designated a National Park in 1954, Exmoor lies one third in Devon and two thirds in Somerset, every acre of which is privately owned or belongs to a corporate concern such as the National Trust or the Somerset County Council. Every step taken on the Moor, and there are 600 miles of public footpaths, is at the courtesy of someone.

Exmoor presents such a diversity of aspects that it can mean different things to different people. For some it is the purple ~ heathered hills and tree ~ filled valleys, for others the precipitous jagged cliffs and coastal heathlands. Some think of it in terms of the white scarred trek up to Dunkery Beacon, the highest spot on Exmoor, others the lovely Doone Valley with its lonesome combes. It could mean a day out in Dunster and a view of the castle, picnics at Landacre Bridge, cream teas at Winsford, a walk through the splendid oakwoods of Horner, or the revitalizing wonderment of Tarr Steps or Watersmeet.
